Why Your AC Freezes Up in a Phoenix Summer

Ice on the copper line isn't the problem — it's the symptom. Here's how to diagnose the real cause and what to check before you call a technician.

It's counterintuitive that an air conditioner would freeze in the middle of a 112°F Phoenix afternoon. But we see it every summer. Ice on the outdoor line set — or worse, a solid block of ice on the indoor evaporator coil — is one of the most common no-cool calls we take between June and August. If it's happening to your system right now, this is what's actually going on and what to do about it before we ever roll a truck.

Why does an AC freeze when it's 110°F outside?

Because the coil surface temperature drops below 32°F, moisture in the return air condenses onto it, and then freezes solid. Once the coil is iced over, no air moves through it, no heat exchange happens, and the system runs continuously while the house never cools. The outdoor heat has nothing to do with it — the freeze is happening inside your air handler.

There are really only four root causes: restricted airflow, low refrigerant, a failing blower motor, or an oversized system short-cycling at night. Every diagnosis we run walks those four in order, because that's the order they fail in Phoenix.

What's the single most common cause?

A dirty air filter that hasn't been changed in six months. It's not glamorous, but in nine out of ten Phoenix freeze-up calls we take, the return-side filter is packed solid with dust from the previous summer's monsoon and this summer's construction. Airflow across the coil drops, coil temperature crashes, and ice forms.

If you can't remember the last time you changed the filter, that's your first move — before you call anyone. A 1-inch pleated MERV 8 or MERV 11 filter in a Phoenix home should be swapped every 60 – 90 days during the cooling season, not annually.

What should I do right now if my coil is frozen?

Shut the system off at the thermostat. Then switch the fan from AUTO to ON. This runs the blower without engaging the compressor and pushes room-temperature air across the frozen coil to thaw it. Depending on how thick the ice is, a full thaw takes anywhere from three to six hours. Do not try to chip ice off the coil — the fins are aluminum and they bend if you look at them wrong.

Once it's fully thawed, put in a fresh filter and turn cooling back on. If the system holds temperature and doesn't ice up again within 24 hours, the filter was the cause and you're done. If it freezes again within a day, you have a refrigerant or blower problem that needs a technician with gauges.

When is a freeze-up a refrigerant leak?

When the filter is clean, the blower is running, and the coil still freezes, it's almost always a low refrigerant charge — and low charge in a sealed system means there's a leak somewhere. In Phoenix, the most common leak points are the Schrader valve caps on the service ports, the brazed joints at the outdoor unit, and pinholes on suction lines that have been rubbing against a roof strap for a decade.

This is not a top-off job. Chasing a leak by adding refrigerant every summer is illegal under 40 CFR Part 82 for systems over 5 pounds, and it's just bad practice at any size. A real repair is: find the leak with electronic and UV dye methods, braze or replace the failed component, pressure-test with nitrogen, evacuate to 500 microns, then recharge to nameplate weight.

How do I stop it from freezing again next summer?

Change filters on a schedule you'll actually keep — put a recurring reminder on your phone for the first of every month during cooling season. Get on a real tune-up cadence so someone puts gauges on the system before summer, not during. And if the system is over 12 years old and freezes more than once a season, start planning the replacement instead of paying for another emergency call in July.
